Singapore General Hospital, established in 1821, is the largest acute tertiary hospital in Singapore and ranked among the world’s best. It provides the most comprehensive patient-centered care with over 50 clinical specialties on its campus. As an Academic Medical Centre, it takes pride in training healthcare professionals and conducting cutting-edge research to meet the evolving needs of the nation as well as the region. Driven by a strong sense of purpose, SGH is committed to giving its best to heal and bring hope, as it has for over 200 years.

A not-for-profit institution, SGH is wholly owned by the government of Singapore and is the flagship hospital of the public healthcare system. SGH is a member of the SingHealth cluster of healthcare institutions.

Patient Care

SGH sees patients referred by Family Physicians as well as specialists in both public and private practice. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of medical services within one complex. There are 5 National Specialist Centres co-located on SGH Campus, facilitating a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. SGH practices team-based care, provided by clinicians, nurses as well as allied health professionals.

Every year, the SGH Campus caters to over 1 million patients. With a 10,000-strong workforce, SGH accounts for about a quarter of the total acute hospital beds in the public sector and about one-fifth of acute beds nationwide.

SGH is accredited by the Joint Commission International for meeting its standards of safety and quality in healthcare. It is also the first in Asia to achieve the Magnet Recognition in 2010 for nursing excellence awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Teaching Hospital

SGH is a leading teaching hospital for undergraduate medical training as well as postgraduate and advanced training of specialist doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.

Students from both the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Medical School, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine spend a substantial part of their curriculum in SGH. The hospital’s medical staff hold teaching positions at both schools.

It also serves as a clinical teaching hospital for student nurses, radiographers and therapists from the polytechnics and medical institutions here and the Asia Pacific region.

Patient-directed Research

SGH seeks to bring its patients new and better care and therapies through research.

Clinical research is an integral part of SGH’s institutional practice and is actively carried out by clinicians and scientists from medical, nursing, and allied health departments. The hospital leverages its multi-disciplinary capabilities, depth of specialization, large patient base, and research affiliations with renowned centers locally and globally.

Collaborating with academic partner Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, which is located on the SGH Campus, the hospital’s goal is to develop the Campus into a hub for translational and clinical research.
