Paediatric Clinic in Singapore: Questions Parents Should Ask

by ClinicGeek. Published on .

The useful questions to ask a paediatric clinic in Singapore are the ones the counter can answer before you register: who the doctor is, which ages they see, what a visit costs, and what to do when they are shut.

A child doctor in Singapore might be a paediatrician or a general practitioner who sees children every day. Both can be the right regular clinic. They are not the same registration, and a night fever is not the moment to discover the difference.

This is general information, not medical advice. If a child is hard to wake, struggling to breathe, fitting, or has a fever under three months, call 995 or go to a children's emergency department.

Who will see my child, and are they registered?

Ask for the doctor's name and whether you will see that person or a rotating roster. Then search the name on the Singapore Medical Council register.

A paediatrician has specialist training in children's medicine. A GP can still be the family doctor for coughs, rashes, and vaccines. What a GP does explains that role. If the sign says paediatric clinic, ask whether the doctor in the room is a paediatrician.

Clinic listings are on paediatric clinics. Doctor profiles are on paediatricians. Town pages with paediatric listings include Tampines, Sengkang, Punggol, Hougang, and Bukit Panjang. Groups such as Kids Clinic and Thomson Paediatric Centre show their branches in one place. Compare them with independent clinics the same way: name, hours, fee.

Which ages do you see, and how do visits work?

Ask the youngest age they accept, including newborns, and the oldest, including secondary-school children. Ask how long a development check takes and whether you can bring a written list of questions. A short guide to the visit itself is what to do when visiting a paediatrician. Common reasons families book are in reasons to visit a paediatrician.

Ask which language the doctor uses. Medication doses for children are easy to mishear.

Can you give the national childhood vaccines?

Ask whether the clinic follows the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule and whether they update the National Immunisation Registry. Bring the health booklet. The schedule, including which doses are compulsory, is in Singapore's childhood vaccine schedule.

Ask what they charge for a vaccine visit if you are not using a polyclinic. Polyclinics also give childhood vaccines. Pick the place you will actually return to for the next dose.

What does a visit cost, and which cards do you take?

Ask for the consultation fee, and whether medicine and a procedure are extra. Ask whether the clinic is on CHAS if you are a Singapore citizen using CHAS for a visit the scheme covers. Do not assume a specialist paediatric bill matches a GP bill, or that every card works at every counter.

There is no single national fee to quote here. Write down the number they give you for a routine consult.

What should we do when you are closed?

Ask for the after-hours instruction in daylight. A mild cough at 10pm can be a 24-hour GP clinic. Trouble breathing cannot. The choice between a GP, a 24-hour clinic, and A&E is in GP, 24-hour clinic, or A&E.

Ask what they want you to do if a baby under three months has a fever. The age rules are in fever in a child. KK Women's and Children's Hospital and National University Hospital both run children's emergency departments. Call 995 if you cannot travel safely.

When would you send us to someone else?

Ask which problems they treat in clinic and which they refer: asthma that is not settling, suspected developmental delay, a murmur, recurrent urine infections. A good answer names the next service, not a shrug.

Teeth are a separate door. Ask who they suggest for a first dental visit, and read children's oral health and how to find a dental clinic.

FAQ

Is a paediatric clinic the same as a GP who sees kids?

No. A paediatric clinic is organised around children, and the doctor may be a paediatric specialist. A GP clinic sees all ages and can still be the right place for everyday childhood illness and vaccines. Check the SMC register either way.

How do I find a child doctor near home?

Open paediatric clinics or a town page such as Sengkang or Tampines. The wider search method is in finding clinics in Singapore.

What if I only have one question and the clinic is busy?

Book the slot anyway, or ask for a nurse callback if the clinic offers one. Doses, fever in a young baby, and breathing do not belong in a queue of unanswered texts.

Write the doctor's name, the consult fee, the vaccine plan, and the after-hours number on your phone before the first illness. Then book the development check while everyone is well.
